Project Overview
This project involved the specialized coating and restoration of marine quay walls at the Centre of Curiosity (COC), located adjacent to the Natural History Museum along Jacque Chirac Street, Saadiyat Cultural District. The primary objective was to achieve a seamless color and finish match with the adjacent NHM quay wall and planters, ensuring a continuous and uniform visual appearance across both developments.
- Total Surface Area: 878 sqm
- Environment: Marine / Coastal Exposure
Project Objectives
- Achieve color consistency with NHM quay wall finishes
- Enhance durability against saltwater and marine exposure
- Restore and prepare surfaces for uniform coating application
- Deliver a high-quality, long-lasting protective system
Scope of Work
1. Surface Inspection & Preparation
- Comprehensive inspection of all surfaces, including down stands
- Identification of coating defects and surface irregularities
- Removal of salts, mineral deposits, marine growth, oils, and grease
- Surface preparation using abrasive blasting and mechanical methods
- Execution of concrete repairs to achieve a uniform substrate

2. Joint & Surface Integration
- Coating of all joints to ensure consistent color continuity
- Elimination of visual inconsistencies across wall sections
- No filler applied, maintaining natural structural profile

3. Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Continuous inspection throughout all stages of coating application
- Adhesion testing conducted to verify coating performance
- Monitoring for defects such as runs, sags, pinholes, or voids
- Use of certified equipment with regular third-party inspections
4. Health, Safety & Environmental
- All personnel equipped with appropriate PPE
- Certified marine operations including boat access and operator
- Emergency response vessel on standby
- Tools secured with lanyards to prevent marine contamination

Coating System
Application of a marine-grade protective coating system, selected and approved to withstand aggressive coastal conditions:
- Application of primer coat for adhesion and corrosion resistance
- Application of intermediate coats to achieve required build thickness
- Application of final topcoat to deliver a uniform color match, smooth finish, and long-term protection
Technical Highlights
- Seamless integration with adjacent NHM quay wall and planters
- Selection of coatings specifically for harsh marine and saltwater exposure
- Maintenance of natural structural profile without the use of fillers
- Execution under strict marine safety protocols with water-based access
Challenges & Solutions
Achieving a perfect visual match with the adjacent NHM quay wall under varying lighting and environmental conditions
Careful coating selection, controlled application process, and quality checks ensured consistent tone and finish across both developments
Working within a marine environment with access and safety constraints
Deployment of specialized marine access methods, trained personnel, and strict safety protocols ensured smooth execution
Final Outcome
The project successfully delivered a visually unified and highly durable marine wall coating system, seamlessly integrating the COC quay wall with the adjacent NHM development. The finished surface provides both aesthetic continuity and long-term protection against coastal environmental conditions.
